Hiring a general contractor

What is a general contractor?

A general contractor oversees a construction or renovation project from start to finish, including hiring and managing the individual subcontractors. Most clients deal only with us, and we in turn supervise the other trades — electrical, plumbing, flooring, roofing, carpentry, masonry and more.

What does a Cruz All Services general contractor do?

After hiring the subcontractors, we manage scheduling and payment for all workers. We supply the materials, tools, machinery and often our own work crew for the less specialized parts of the job, and we monitor safety for the duration of the project.

When should I hire a general contractor?

The sooner, the better. You want a contractor you're comfortable with, who shows you past work you like and is easy to reach. Good contractors usually have several projects going, so book early to secure your spot — start looking in the fall, for example, for a spring renovation.

Does my remodeling job need a permit?

We recommend erring on the side of caution and getting a permit for any remodeling or renovation project. A permit proves your upgrade was done correctly and up to code. Permits take time, so research requirements early — without one you risk fines or being shut down mid-project, and re-coordinating schedules can push the finish date back by months.

How accurate is my project estimate?

Your written estimate is a careful, detailed projection, but a project rarely runs without surprise situations that have to be handled — sometimes at an added cost — before the crew can get back on course. It's smart to plan for the possibility of unexpected costs on top of the projected total.

During the project

Who will I talk to while work is happening?

You'll have one point of contact from our team for the whole project.

What happens if the scope changes?

We'll explain the change and give you a written price before doing any extra work.

Do you clean up?

Yes. We keep the work area tidy each day and do a full cleanup at the end.

Do you help with insurance claims after storm or water damage?

We provide photos, a written scope and an estimate that you can share with your insurer.
